Rebuilding the Congo

The Republic Democratic of the Congo (DRC) is mostly known as one of the world’s worst and most affected by humanitarian crises because of its political instability, civil war, massive population displacement, widespread rape against women as well as the collapse of public health services and education. Despite its crises the Congo is also very wealthy in natural resources which are not exploited to its potential/fullest.

The Congolese people have suffered and have been victimized for a long time. The Eastern Congo has been at the centre of a civil war since 1996. Rape is a tactic used by armed groups to humiliate, frighten, and destroy individuals, families, and communities. Various rebel groups, and sometimes even members of the Congolese army, have engaged in mass rapes, to intimidate the population. According to UNICEF, more than 200,000 women and girls are reported to have been raped over the past 12 years.

Local health-centre statistics report that an average of 40 women is raped every day in just two provinces. Of these, 13% of victims are under 14 years old, 3% die as a result of rape, and 10-12% contract HIV.  Since 2004 some efforts have started to rebuild the Congo on every level but the country’s instability has affected every Congolese.   Statistics from UNICF indicate that about 4 millions children go to school but this is only half of the number of children who should be registered in school, girls are especially affected in the area of education because of lack of resources, they stay home and boys are sent to school. In places such as the Eastern Congo, the school system is practically nonexistent because of the years of war. In 2000, 65 percent of children ages 10 to 14 years were attending school. As a result of the 6-year civil war, over 5.2 million children in the country receive no education
